Rental car insurance

One of the most common questions we are asked is “am I covered driving a rental car?”

Well, yes and no.

US and Canada only

I had a customer call me on the way home from a Mexican vacation. He had been driving a rental car for two weeks and wondered if his policy would cover it. It was NOT covered. Luckily, he did not have any incidents, because it wouldn’t have been a good vacation if he had spent it in a Mexican prison.

You are NOT covered for Loss of Rent

Rental car companies make money only when their cars are rented. If the car you’ve rented gets damaged in an accident, the rental car company can require you to reimburse it for money lost while the car is being repaired.

For what is covered, the most important question you have to ask yourself is if you have collision and comprehensive for your own vehicle. The coverage will temporarily extend to a rental for an average of 28 days.
